BOND'S MEMORIES - CANDY, SNACKS & NOVELTIES
I thought I would take a look back to some of the candy, snacks & novelty items that not only I, but my parents enjoyed growing up...and YES...when we happen to find these anywhere...we definately stock up on them. There are alot of companies/stores who still sell the "retro" or "nostalgic" candy...and all you have to do is do an internet search for "retro candy" & order online...I know we have... So sit back & ENJOY...
My memory: (This comes from my mother) I remember that this was one of my favorite chewing gums. My mother loved the gum and as a child she would give us a stick of gum. Then as I got older I bought the gum for myself. After the gum came back again I introduced it to my children and bought many packs to store away and then it was gone again. Every now and then I'll see it on the shelves again. I'm always looking for it. I think it was one of the best gums made!
The first item...is chewing gum. BEEMAN'S gum was originally invented by an Ohio Doctor in the late 19th century. It was made from pepsin powder & chicle as an aid to digestion. Adams Company bought it in 1898. Production ultimately ceased in 1978 due to lagging sales. In 1985, as part of a nostalgia campaign, it was brought back along with CLOVE & BLACK JACK gum. You can STILL find it today, as Cadbury Adams still occasionally makes it. CLICK HERE for the WIKIPEDIA article on BEEMAN'S gum

Next up is BLACK JACK chewing gum. It has a VERY interesting history, in 1869 former Mexican President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna had been exiled & living in New Jersey. He had brought a ton of Mexican chicle with him in hopes of selling it to fund his return to power in Mexico. He persuaded Thomas Adams to buy it. Adams first attempted to create a rubber substitute but it failed, so he noticed that Santa Anna chewed it, so he made a gum with it and took it to a local store to see if people would be interested in it & well the rest is history. In 1884, Admas added licorice flavoring and called it Black Jack. It was the FIRST flavored gum in the US and also the FIRST gum to be offered in sticks. You can STILL find it today, as Cadbury Adams still occasionally makes it. CLICK HERE for the WIKIPEDIA article on BLACK JACK gum

My memory: I remember my mother getting ever so excited in 1985 or so, when the gum made it's "second coming", I tried it and was NOT impressed, because I was NEVER fond of licorice flavor. But whenever I see it I remember that it is something that my parents used when they were growing up.

Next up is CLOVE chewing gum. There is not alot of info out there for this one, but from Cadbury Global's website they state that "1914, Adams introduces Clove Gum, which becomes popular in speakeasies during prohibition as a way to mask alcohol on the breath." You can STILL find it today, as Cadbury Adams still occasionally makes it.

| TEABERRY chewing gum was developed by the D.L. Clark Company. It's popularity peaked in the 1960's when there were a series of commercials produced featuring Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. The gum had a vaguely wintergreen flavor. The gum was pink in colour & wrapped in white paper & then wrapped again in a pink teaberry printed paper. | My memory: I remember when this gum was reintroduced in the mid to late 1980's, I could always remember it because there was a restaurant in Ashland, KY called Teaberry's. We bought alot of the gum, but it was not one of my favorites, BUT I certainly never passed up chewing a stick of it. |
